   I checked that using fontinst on these afm files in the following way 
   \afmtomtx{cmr10}{cmr10}
   \mtxtopl{cmr10}{cmr10}

   yields .pl files that are (after pltotf/tftopl) exactly equal to the
   ones from metafont cms.

   sounds good.

It is hard to imagine how that could be unless your PL files are
also corrupted, since these AFM files have the wrong advance widths.
