pb with dvips

is there some hard wired number of fonts allowed with dvips(k)  5.66a
(web2c 7.0 -- i'll upgrade to 7.2 as soon as i get Tex live 3).

I have made a simple document having 
 978333 words of font info for 393 fonts, out of 1000000 for 2000
but dvips segfaults on it even if i only ask for the first page.

(i know it's not necessarily the most appropriate place for this
question, but i suppose people using many fonts at once are on this
list)
