[metapost] latexmp and german Umlaute

I use german umlaute like äöü etc.

For latexmp I use these settings:

setupLaTeXMP(
class="article",
options="10pt",
packages="babel[german],fontenc[T1],inputenc[latin1],helvet[scaled=0.8]",
preamble="\renewcommand*{\rmdefault}{\sfdefault}\newcommand{\textsize}
{\small}"
)


with \inputenc and \fontenc  this should not be a problem.
However all the umlaute disapperar in the output :-(

Any idea what the reason is ?
