You can use any postscript font in Adobe's encoding, like pcrr.

That sounds reasonably efficient.

if you do not use a virtual font?

No, and I highly doubt that we ever will do that. Creating RPMs is
normally handled by volunteers from Fedora, usually using teTeX as
starting point.
