Why not to follow Ghostscript convention (following C convention ;-)
allowing for any (from a practical point of view) format of the output
file name? For example, one could invoke METAPOST as follows
    mpost a_name.mp -oanother_name%02d.eps
in order to produce output
    another_name01.eps
    another_name02.eps
    another_name03.eps
    ...
