It's one of those things that is done different ways by different people
at different times, not really purely an American vs. British
convention.  No idea if it is always hyphenated in Br.Eng.

FWIW, I personally prefer "counterclockwise" with no hyphen, and that is
what we always do in TUGboat.

You should feel free to make this executive decision, either way :).
