I'm sorry but it seems as if you're asking questions without reading the
documentation first. I quote from the MetaPost manual (
http://www.tug.org/docs/metapost/mpman.pdf)'s very first introductory
paragraph:

Another feature borrowed from METAFONT is the ability to solve linear
equations that are given implicitly, thus allowing many programs to be
written in a largely declarative style.

1) I suppose one would normally consider the official documentation to be
authoritative. All the examples and tutorial for MPost out there also
clearly show that it can do this.

2) "not implement in any package" does not mean "not implement in the
source code".

3) Finally, I don't think Taco did that -- I think Hobby himself did it
back in the old days.

Google around for articles on the Latin Modern family. Why do you want to
reinvent the wheel?
