[metapost] I cannot use metapost (mpost)

The message reported above was 
    sudo apt-get install texlive - binaries

It seems to have been automatically generated and it seems 
(to me) to indicate only binaries were installed. I don't know anything 
about Ubuntu, but it would seem that the non-binary portion of the 
metapost support is missing.
