No.

  $ mpost --version
  MetaPost 1.9991 (TeX Live 2016) (kpathsea version 6.2.2)

Honestly, if MetaPost behaves differently on OS X in this respect,
it's definitely not intended.  All binaries we have in TeX Live are
compiled from the same sources.

Luigi, do you have a clue?
