And people who rebuild the base file because they have added a mode to
modes.mf need to dump a file called mf-nowin.base which is non-obvious.

If someone really needs to find out that he has to call mfw, he will do. I
have a report by someone (he lives in stanford and has stopped using email
some time ago) who has finally found mfw even though the teTeX docs say
that he needs to call mf.X (which is corrected in my sources now).
