[tex-k] Difficulties with texmfvar feature

Ack. The texmfvar feature was invented by me and I also wrote the
implementation that uses
  : ${MT_TEXMFVAR=`kpsewhich --expand-path='$TEXMFVAR'`}

I think that I just was not aware of the fact that --expand-path expands
to nothing if the target does not yet exist.

The suggested fix looks just right.
