I'm glad to hear it wouldn't be hard. If at some point you (or anyone)
can add it to kpsewhich (and then Taco add it to LuaTeX's kpse library),
it could be interesting.

I could try, but I fear performance issues. I mean, the whole point of
ls-R files is to avoid too many system calls, isn't it?
