Right - there are a few cases (certain font features, various graphics formats) that are supported only via this path, not by the xdvipdfmx driver. I believe some people do still use it for these reasons, although xdvipdfmx is the default (and recommended) driver for general use.

Are builds available for people to test yet? I'd guess that VERY few potential users are ready to compile TL themselves.....
