The following command works now and generates a PDF file.

hille at drachi:~$ cat a.eps | ./epstopdf.pl --outfile a.pdf --filter
hille at drachi:~$ file a.pdf 
a.pdf: PDF document, version 1.4
hille at drachi:~$
