To make sure I checked if it could be a limitation of the system: it
is not:
hille at sid:~ $ dd if=/dev/zero of=a1 count=4300000
4300000+0 records in
4300000+0 records out
2201600000 bytes (2.2 GB) copied, 108.588 s, 20.3 MB/s
hille at sid:~ $ ls -l a1
