So is your point (I think -- it's always helpful to explain reasoning)
that the accented E makes the height of the line larger than the strut
height? I'll ask the others.

    P.S. Please help me to understand why \makeheadline was not
    implemented this way:
        \vbox to0pt{\vskip-14pt
        \vbox to0pt{\vss\line{\the\headline}}\vss}
        \nointerlineskip

I don't know. He didn't think of it? If anyone else has any ideas, I'm
