Sure! Without it the user cannot write to nonwritable $TEXMFMAIN/fonts
What about:

# uncomment the following line to use ps2pk instead of gsftopk:
# : ${ps_to_pk=ps2pk}

lines in mktex.cnf? I see gsftopk is default at compile time. However
some may want to play with ps2pk ;-)
