why not? anyway, I am not going to second-guess how people adminster
their Unix/Linux boxes. Personally, I think that running off the CD is
very much an "expert" option!

sure. pdftex is set up by default to work that way, ie not make PK
fonts.

and did it make PK files for you on the fly? or did teTeX come with
them installed
