yes, I want to test another version of irix 6.5 binaries before
uploading them to tug.org.

texmf.cnf seems to be hardwired to the main tree. I added a copy of it to
the texmf-var tree and run the following test for the current site setup:

  ls -l /opt/local/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/texmf.cnf
  -rw-r--r--   1 root  other  26144 Mar 27 17:21 /opt/local/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/texmf.cnf

  ls -l /opt/local/TeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf
  -rw-r--r--   1 root  other  26144 Mar 19 18:06 /opt/local/TeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

  kpsewhich --expand-var '$TEXMFCNF'
  /opt/local/TeX/texmf-var/web2c:{/opt/local/TeX/bin/sparc-solaris2.7,/opt/local/TeX/bin,/opt/local/TeX}{,{/share,}/texmf{.local,}/web2c}

  kpsewhich texmf.cnf
  /opt/local/TeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf

texmf.cnf from texmf-var tree, the first one on the search path, is not found.

texmf.cnf in source.development is very useful, at least for testing.
