This was bad timing ;-) I planned to email you to remove the
*.xdvi settings since they break xdvik[1], which was reported to
me by an OS X user. Before that I decided to ask Thomas Esser
whether it would make sense to put the *.XDvi settings into
texmf.cnf by default (as recommended by the INSTALL file of
xdvi[2]). But he had observed that they seemed to be no longer
needed with current xdvi[2] (and it also worked for me without
them). It seems that this change was introduced in xdvi-22.65;
http://math.berkeley.edu/~vojta/xdvi.html says:

   22.65 [23 October 2002] ... Changed some environment variable
      names for compatibility with Kpathsea.

Paul, can you confirm this? Should the corresponding paragraph
from xdvi's INSTALL be removed?

This would mean that all the settings listed above should be
removed, so that only the default entries from teTeX's texmf.cnf
remain:

PKFONTS = .;{$TEXMF/fonts,$VARTEXFONTS}/pk/{$MAKETEX_MODE,modeless}//
GFFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/gf/$MAKETEX_MODE//
GLYPHFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts
MISCFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/misc//
T1FONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/type1//
AFMFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/afm//
VFFONTS = .;$TEXMF/fonts/vf//
TFMFONTS = .;{$TEXMF/fonts,$VARTEXFONTS}/tfm//

[1] xdvi + kpathsea extensions
[2] Paul Vojta's original xdvi without kpathsea

Best,
Stefan
