Some time ago I was a user of GNU Stow.  I don't recall why I
stopped, but ISTR Stow would address that kind of issue.

Similarly someone recently suggested on the automake list that
`make install' creates an `uninstall.sh' script (the problem
with `make uninstall' is that you need to keep the source tree).
There are many issues related to user's install/unstall rules,
plus I'm not sure this sort of administravia falls into `make
install''s job.
