Nonsense. Of course it works perfectly well with pdftex, as long as
you set \pdfoutput=0, thus taking the DVI->PS route that pdftex is
perfectly capable of supporting.

Since we are talking about what executables to include on the TeXlive
CD, I don't see why not. But as far as I know (I have not followed
too closely), the discussion is more or less over (at least with teTeX
it was): for historical and legal reasons, the executable named "tex"
will run the TeX engine (with plain TeX and just US-American
hyphenation preloaded), everything else will run PDFeTeX.
