[tex-live] fwd: \delta in overfull \hboxes screws up xterm

Please, have a look at the forwarded mail. Paul Vojta shows a problem
with the "all characters printable" setting.  When replying, please
consider that Paul did not follow the discussion in may/june on the
texlive list about this neverending story...

In a follow-up, he wrote:
    Never mind ... it's being set in fmtutil.cnf.
    I hope Thomas seriously considers taking it out.

So, despite the fact that there was silence on *this list* about this
for a few weeks, I fear that we have to open this problem for discussion
again.

Folks:

When you have $\delta$ in the text produced by an overfull \hbox, it leaves
xterm in some funny mode in which most of the characters are graphics
things of some sort.

This is with teTeX-beta-2.96.4.20040627 (TeX, Version 3.141592 (Web2C 7.5.3)).

Here's a sample plain tex file:

	\showhyphens{$\delta$}
	\bye

My environment contains (among other things):

	LANG=C
	LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO-8859-1
