FWIW I just checked in new code containing fixes for the encTeX
problem, which threw a spanner into the printing functions already.

In TeX, the decision whether to expand a character into an escape
sequence is made comparatively early, and the selector determining
where a character goes includes |term_only|, |log_only|, and
|term_and_log|. This complicates matters somewhat.
