i know; only non tex stuff stays there and i only wanted to point out that 
patterns are a border case (patterns packages in primitives); this would 
also mean that in pinciple the pdftex map files can go since we can build 
files like:

psfonts.tex ==

\pdfmapline{....}
\pdfmapline{....}

and put those files in some texmf/tex/pdftex path after which we got rid of 
fonts/enc/pdftex which makes live even more simple.

(in a way it's a pitty that tfm files don't go into the texinputs path as 
well because now one cannot test for their existence in convenient ways 
from within tex)

sure, but looking at what goes into those paths (esp the kind of content in 
the 'tex' files) i get more and more lost in the logic -)
