That should teach me to send the messages earlier ...

I checked in the update. Please note that the changes had to be 
slightly different than what I initially though, because of the 
way TeX hadles strings. I had to separate the strings in the 
pool file (the one returned by \<something>Version) from the 
ones that appear in the banner.

Let me know if I messed up badly with something.

(BTW, how do you *close* files you opened without submitting 
any changes, in perforce?)
