There is long-standing, and widespread, practice in the Unix world of
referring to a temporary directory in scripts via the name TMPDIR,
rather than TMP.

For example, on Sun Solaris 10, here are manual pages for some
programs that use TMPDIR:

	% grep -l TMPDIR /usr/share/man/man*/*
	/usr/share/man/man1/ar.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/as.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/cpio.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/ed.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/gpatch.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/lari.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/lorder.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/mktemp.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/pax.1
	/usr/share/man/man1/prex.1
	/usr/share/man/man1m/nispopulate.1m
	/usr/share/man/man1m/pkgadd.1m
	/usr/share/man/man1m/ufsrestore.1m
	/usr/share/man/man3c/tmpnam.3c
	/usr/share/man/man7fs/tmpfs.7fs

On GNU/Linux, the list is even longer: 50 on one of my systems.

The Sun tmpfs manual page says:
