No, on preview.sty.  preview-latex is the Emacs application.

Uh, you are talking about a basically undocumented style file, not
about its documentation.  Still, the file is _plastered_ all over with
references to the preview package.

Everything is one tarball, AUCTeX, but the various parts are installed
into different places by the installation procedure.  The default is
to place the preview styles into the TeX tree, but that's not the only
option.

The directory CTAN:macros/latex/contrib/preview has always been
provided for the styles only.
