I don't recall whether my other mail also went to this list, therefore
again:

This setting was meant to implement a "compatibility mode", and allow
packages for teTeX-2.0.2 on Debian to work with the teTeX-3.0 packages
that I was/am preparing.  Now that sarge is released (without
teTeX-3.0), I will drop it and force the other packages' maintainers to
update their installation paths.
