Every PNG file I tried (mostly big indexed color remote sensing images)
produced a core dump, so there something fundamentally broken with my libpng.a
(from pdftex-1.30.4/src/libs/libpng). It may be that a system libpng (or zlib)
compiled with different options will work. I got a core dump from
pdftex-1.30.4/src/libs/libpng/pdftest (you will have build it manually)
which uses pdftex-1.30.4/src/libs/libpng/pngtest.png.

On our SGI machines pdftex has to work reliably with the png files created by
RSInc's IDL language. If you have IDL there are lots of example files in
/usr/local/rsi/idl/examples/data.
