[tex-live] question about skak, special.map

Hi,

im using texlive2005-live-20051102

i tried to use skak ( a package for typesetting chess games), but the 
little pictures for the chess figures were not produced.

I added the lines

skakf10         public          skak
skakf10b        public          skak

to the file:
 /usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/fonts/map/fontname/special.map

and then removed the folder:
/usr/local/texlive/2005/texmf-dist/fonts/tfm/public/skak

Well, it worked. But i do not know why. I would like to ask, which of the two things, 
helped?
