AFAIK, TeX Live on *ix doesn't depend on any particular locations. So
long as the bin/<arch> directory is properly set in your PATH list
everything should work, but if you want a more conventional PATH
setting you can use symbolic links. This has the advantage that you
can quickly switch, e.g., between an NSF mounted texlive tree and the
loop mounted .iso, simply by adjusting the symbolic link without the
need to change the PATH setting. One feature of the .iso is that you
can't make changes, but even that can be accommodated using unionfs.
