It seems that I found the source of the problem. The bbold* fonts are
declared in three files, namely Ubbold.fd, ubbold.fd, and subbold.fd.
The first of them defines the sizes based on existing *.mf files while
the next two rely upon Sauter interpolation. Moreover, the comments in
subbold.fd say that it probably does not work. In LaTeX terminology,
the fonts have \fontencoding{U}. Originally in NFSS2 the file name was
composed from the encoding and family, ie. Ubbold in this case. Due to
problems on some case insensitive file systems now the encoding name
is lowercased, ie. ubbold.fd is expected. I would prefer removing both
ubbold.fd and subbold.fd and renaming Ubbold.fd to ubbold.fd.

Fortunatelly kpsewhich combined with find is like Babbage's analytical
engine. It has no pretentions to originate anything but it can do
whatever you know how to order it. (modified citation of Ada Adelaida,
Countess of Lovelace)
