[tex-live] configure can't handle pathnames with spaces

The only feasible way to fix this is to update everything to use a
current version of Autoconf, which does not have these problems, as far
as I can see.  (ac_config_sub isn't even used any more.  I think these
problems were fixed years ago in Autoconf.)

peb put in a lot of effort toward this end a couple years ago, but
unfortunately we were unable to push things to the point of committing
the changes.

Barring someone else stepping in and making it happen, I can't promise
any particular timetable.  It's obviously a big job.  2008 looks dubious :(.
