The system cannot detect buffer overflows.  A segmentation fault is
raised when an additional memory page is needed.  The system doesn't
know what your program does with the memory pages it already assigned
to your process.

And the buffer-overflow exploits usually succeed before a new memory
page is needed.  See also:
