FUSE, however, is a kernel module, and requires root to install it, so it doesn't solve my problem (installing texLive on an NFS mount for a compute cluster where I don't have 'mount' privileges).

Isomaster doesn't provide a command-line interface, so for scripted installs isn't very convenient.  It looks like it provides a nice iso9660 library though, so I might rewrite uniso to use it instead of using isoinfo.

It's happifying (http://www.pooryorick.com/pub/2007/20071227053701) to hear that the next release of texLive will be released in other formats besides iso.  Thanks Karl!
