But why? In Unix, OS doesn't differ the part of file name before the
last dot and after the last dot. It's a FILE NAME. There are no
extensions in Unix that OS actually cares about. However, varios GUIs
(KDE, GNOME, Xfce..) and their file managers actually look for file
extension when determining file type, to make it easier for the user.
However, some of them (at least Nautilus does that) compare the file
extension to actual file content (determined from file header, you can
do it in shell with "file") and complains if it finds it different.
