[tex-live] font map files?

Of course, but unfortunately dvips doesn't support it yet.  This is
required if LaTeX switches to \pdfmapfile.  But I hope that it happens
in the near future because all the updmap and updmap-sys stuff is
quite confusing.

Suppose that you run updmap.  You'll get your personal updmap.cnf.  If
your system administrator installs a new font you can't use it because
the change is not reflected in your personal updmap.cnf.   

What a mess!  It would be nice if every program understands \pdfmapfile
or \special{map: ...} or whatever and we can get rid if
{psfonts,pdftex,dvipdfm}.map.
