As a check, I just made sure that gs can handle PDF-1.5 compression.
For a test file I downloaded the PDF 1.6 Reference from
<http://partners.adobe.com/public/developer/pdf/index_reference.html>
and viewed it with gs.  It was no problem.  So Multivalent seems to be
the culprit, as you say.

I also committed r3598 renaming the .tar.gz.pdf ones to .tar.gz.
