Thanks Harald, I got a solution from the powerdot mailing list. It turns
out that the powerdot.cls and powerdot-*.sty files in the Ubuntu fiesty
package of texlive is too old. Downloading newer files from ctan and
doing an sudo mktexlsr fixed the problem.
