I suppose that it heavily depends on the hardware.  I can install TL
from the DVD within 38 minutes and within 25 minutes from the CD.  The
need to extract 58,430 files from 5,171 directories is certainly quite
unusual and I assume that CD/DVD drives are not optimized for this
task.  I did not spend much money for my DVD writer but it seems that
I'm in luck.

CPU time doesn't matter, but it seems that head movements are
significant.  Maybe it matters in which order files are copied to the
ISO image.  Maybe the Joliet and RockRidge extensions are problematic
too.  I don't know anything about them, but if there is a translation
table for each directory, that might a problem (which cannot be solved
easily, if at all).
