What do you mean with "shadow directories"?

Creating an index of the files (location inside the tar-file)
and providing them as virtual directories?

Is there a possibility to select files from a tar-archive
in arbitrary access? Or must such a tool be written?
As far as I know, all implementations of tar only provide
serial access...
...is this, what you called "shadow directories", is good for...
...to have arbitrary aces on each file inside the tarfile?

This will be faster than directory access?

P.S.: Are you all on tex-live-ML?
So: is the cc necessary? If the confirmation-mail now
will be processed, I'm now on the list.
