This is exactly what I do.  But this cannot be done automatically in a
platform independent way and it is nearly impossible to explain people
how to do it, especially if new instances of /dev/loop are required.

Hence we cannot omit the installer.

Anyway, I just installed TL-2005 from the DVD using the installer.
Quite interesting.  The DVD drive had been very silent as compared
with TL-2007 installation.

It had been reported by many people that installing TL-2007 is quite
noisy, so there is probably something wrong with the DVD.

That's the theory.  

Nobody complained that there is something wrong with the TL-2005 DVD
as far as I know.  Sorry that I cannot reduce the confusion.  When I
install TeXLive-2005, the DVD drive is quite silent, but curiously it
takes ten minutes more than installing TeXLive-2007.
