And the OpenBSD directory structure requires that a port (or however a
custom-prepared installation of some software is called) installs into
/usr/local?  That seems odd.

If you don't install all the fonts, you should definitely run updmap-sys
(not updmap!), and you should do it with a proper updmap.cfg.  If you
change the way the installed parts are selected, you need to adapt
updmap.cfg manually, too.
