    Doesn't it make more sense if tex, metapost, and metafont look out for
    TEXEDIT only?

They could fall back to TEXEDIT, but as always I am leery of simply
removing long-existing functionality.  Although admittedly this is
pretty obscure.  Patches welcome :).
