Can't speak for the OP, but I routinely have several TeX Live versions
going and use environment modules <http://modules.sourceforge.net/>.
This is used to set the PATH and whatever other variables are needed.
It isn't much use for people who rely on GUI exclusively, and I do
have to restart emacs if I want to use auctex with a different PATH.
The problem of TL2008 seeing variables appropriate to TL2007
should not arise.
