This is rather vague -- how were you installing auctex?   Doesn't
auctex use GNU install-info?  Did you set INSTALL_INFO to the
version you wanted configure to use?

It really should be called something like ginstall-info.  There are many GNU
utilities whose names conflict with tools that already existed before the GNU
versions came along.    Installers could check for such issues, e.g.,
which "install" program is the GNU version, or is it called "ginstall", but
as long as there are bugs to be fixed, I'd prefer that developers work on
those, and just let me use INSTALL_INFO to direct configure to the right
binary.
