Hi Werner, 
I'm back in Hannover now.  Yes, the ftstring binary is built indeed.
According to Build/source/configure.in, FreeType 1 is still used by
ttf2pk.

It's quite easy to get rid of FreeType_1: ./Build --without-ttf2pk

However, it doesn't solve the problem.  xdvi-xaw still requires
libXau.  The problem is not FreeType related.  It's caused by libX11
and I don't see any simple solution.

libX11 loads libXau dynamically and libX11 is used by all programs
providing graphical output, such as xdvi, metafont, and so on.
Thus, we cannot simply remove the -X11 linker flag.
