Sorry to hear it.  It's an area we (especially Norbert) have been trying
to improve nearly every day.  Maybe it will be better by the time you
try again.  That is the way to go.

    Last year I sent an email hoping you would provide a xdvik-motif
    binary as an option to the ugly xaw version. Do you want my custom
    build? It is actually a lesstif build, but, it works great and
    looks heaps better than xaw.

Sounds good in principle, but first it should get into upstream xdvik.
Please send the patch to tex-k at tug.org, ok?  I wouldn't look for 
xdvi-lesstif binaries in this year's release.  Sorry.  Just updating to
the latest xdvik is proving to be rather time-consuming.
