I think I'm getting ahead of myself here: I was able to bypass the error
with depends, but I managed to get instead the old error about
language.us.def missing. It seems that what's going on is that the
mirror are not entirely synchronized and that what it means to install
TL 2008 varies from mirror to mirror. I'll stick with
ftp://tug.org/texlive/tlnet/tldev/ from now on.

When running the script with the flags -v -v I do see the problem with
dvipdfmx that you mention:

  [snip]
  DD:pre_selected oca
  DD:pre_selected collection-langitalian
  DD:pre_selected foilhtml
  DD:pre_selected collection-documentation-base
  DD:pre_selected collection-documentation-english
  DD:pre_selected dvipdfx
Can't call method "depends" on an undefined value at ./install-tl line 599.

Any hints for how to proceed?

Thanks,

Jesse
